Is a layover in Helsinki worth it?

Yes, in my opinion, a layover in Helsinki is definitely worth it. Helsinki Airport is well connected to the city centre, and you can get into central Helsinki in around 30 minutes by train. The train is both easy and affordable, making it a convenient option for a short layover.

I mean, if the alternative is spending your entire layover at the airport, why not get a little taste of Finland’s capital instead?

How much time do you need for a layover in Helsinki?

As a general rule, 6 hours or more between flights gives you enough time to head into Helsinki, spend a couple of hours exploring, and return to the airport without feeling too rushed.

The journey to the city centre takes around 30 minutes by train, so with a six-hour layover, you could have roughly 2–3 hours to explore while still leaving plenty of time to get back to the airport and catch your next flight. Just make sure to allow enough time for security, passport control, and any other formalities required for your particular flight.

If you have more time, even better! There’s plenty to see and do in Helsinki, and you could easily spend a full day or even an entire weekend exploring the city.

Things To Do On A Layover In Helsinki: Itinerary Ideas

As the capital of Finland, Helsinki has plenty to see and do, even if you only have a few hours between flights. To make the most of your layover, I recommend prioritizing the sights and experiences you’re most interested in. Plot your must-see spots in Google Maps ahead of time so you can easily see what’s nearby as you explore.

Below you’ll find a selection of things you shouldn’t miss on a layover in Helsinki.

Explore on foot

To make the most of your layover in Helsinki, I recommend exploring on foot. The city center is relatively compact, making it easy to walk between many of the main sights. Take a relaxed stroll through the streets, admire the architecture, stop for a coffee, and see where the wind takes you. You never know what little shops, cafés, or hidden corners you might discover along the way.

See Helsinki Cathedral

Even if you’re short on time, Helsinki Cathedral is a must-see during a layover in Helsinki. Located on Senate Square, this iconic neoclassical landmark is one of the city’s most recognizable sights and makes for a great stop while exploring central Helsinki. You can admire its impressive exterior from the square or step inside to see the simple, elegant interior.

📍 Unioninkatu 29

Uspenski Cathedral

Uspenski Cathedral is another impressive landmark worth visiting during a layover in Helsinki. With its distinctive red-brick exterior and golden domes, it’s one of the city’s most striking buildings and the largest Orthodox church in Northern and Western Europe. Located right by the harbour, it’s easy to combine with a walk along the waterfront.

Visit a Moomin shop

The Moomins are adorable white trolls that are a beloved part of Finnish culture. Created by Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson in the 1940s, they’ve become famous through books, TV, and more, loved by both kids and adults. You’ll find Moomin shops throughout Helsinki, making them a fun stop and a great place to pick up a truly Finnish souvenir. Short on time? There’s even a Moomin shop at Helsinki Airport.

Top Tips For A Great Layover In Helsinki

1. Do a Little Research in Advance

To make the most of your Helsinki layover, I recommend doing a little bit of research before you arrive. Nothing too extravagant. Just get an idea of what you want to prioritize seeing and doing while you’re there, and check if there’s anything special happening during your visit, such as seasonal markets or events.

That way you won’t miss out on something you would have loved to see. I didn’t do much research before my first layover in Helsinki, and I ended up missing out on so many things!

2. Don’t Try to Do Too Much

It can be tempting to squeeze as much as possible into a short layover, but try to resist the urge. Allow yourself plenty of time to explore without constantly checking the clock. The last thing you want is to spend your time in Helsinki rushing from one place to another or worrying about missing your connecting flight.

3. Take the Train from the Airport

The train is probably the easiest way to get from Helsinki Airport to the city centre. The journey takes around 30 minutes each way, and it’s easy to find the train station at the airport and purchase tickets. Information is available in English, so the whole process is straightforward.

A taxi can take roughly the same amount of time as the train, but it’s much more expensive. You also risk getting stuck in traffic, especially during rush hour. The bus is a cheaper option, but the journey can take around 40 to 50 minutes.

4. Wear Comfortable Shoes

If you plan on exploring Helsinki on foot, which I highly recommend, don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes. Helsinki is a great city to explore by walking, and you’ll want footwear that can handle a few hours of sightseeing without leaving your feet sore.

5. Consider Taking a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

Not a fan of walking, tired after a long flight, or simply want to see more of Helsinki with less effort? Or perhaps its super cold, hot, or rainy? Taking a hop-on hop-off bus can be a great option. It’s a comfortable way to see many of the city’s main sights while sitting back and enjoying the views. I wish I had done this on my layover, as it was freezing cold and we barely got to see anything.
